Project Aims
This project aims to bring the user on a guided tour of the stretch of the Lagan Towpath between Lisburn and Belfast.
The aim was to not only focus on the history of the area, but also to place emphasis on the space as a former location of industry, which has now been reclaimed by nature.
This is exemplified by the emphasis on visual storytelling and soundscapes.
The aim is not simply to make informative videos about the area, but also to transport the user to the location, bringing them on a bite sized version of a journey along the river which has played a key role in the development of Belfast and it’s surrounding areas.
Target Broadcaster
The lagan towpath has been the subject of a number of projects developed by the Lagan Valley Regional Park.
These have primarily been in the form of locative media projects, namely the Lagan Valley Regional Park Audio Trail, as well as an augmented reality app which was cancelled.
This project takes an alternative approach, rather than enhancing the experience of the location while there, Locks of the Lagan aims to bring the Lagan to its users. This means that the lagan towpath can now be experienced by a broader number of people, who may not be immediately accessible to the Lagan.
While also appealing to those who regularly walk the route, pointing out details which many miss and encouraging users to go and explore these locations themselves.
This is in line with the aims of the Lagan Valley Regional Park, in promoting the lagan as a place of outstanding natural beauty.
This highlights the importance of maintaining such publicly owned spaces, ensuring that they can be appreciated and protected for generations to come.
